ahimsa peace silk

Ahimsa is a Sanskrit term meaning 'non-violence' or 'non-harm'.

The term Ahimsa or peace silk is used to refer to silk that is produced without harming silkworms.

Peace Silk is produced by allowing the silkworms to complete their metamorphosis into moths before harvesting their cocoons which means waiting an extra ten days until the moth comes out the cocoon, which in turn creates a hole through the fibres thus yielding only one sixth of the conventional silk worm harvest. making Ahimsa silk around double the price to produce.

Ahimsa silk is made on a very small scale as a cottage industry in India, and its production supports a wide community of rural silk farmers.

In conventionall silk production the cocoons are steamed, boiled, or dried in the sun, killing the live silk larvae inside.

Ahimsa means to live with respect for all living beings, that is what Ahimsā or Peace Silk is based on.

Ghandi saw non violence as a path to achieving inner peace and social justice

he believed that non violence is the greatest force available to humanity, more powerful than any weapon.

Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will.

Its seat is in the heart,

and it must be an inseparable part of our being ”

Mahatma Gandhi
