“Through the creation of these garments I hope to help facilitate an inward journey to an open heart, loving and accepting of oneself…a journey back home.”

about

Handmade evokes an inner truth, one that is feminine and free, by lovingly nurturing the body of women while respecting the body of the earth and her cycles.

“The unstructured nature of the cloth I use enables a collaboration and connection between the wearer and the garment. making each piece unique and innate to the one inhabiting it.”

Many women wearing the same garment will each look individual. The garment does not compete with, but embraces and enhances each wearers unique form.

No matter the season of life, whether a maiden, mother or grandmother, ‘Handmade’ illuminates the internal beauty and true nature of the wearer.

“I am devoted to a creative process that offers the garment wearer authentic and present connection to their own true nature, giving them the freedom and space to embody themselves.”

Established in Sydney in 1988, Handmade by Tania Angeli now abides in the creative hub of Bellingen NSW, where she lives immersed in the natural landscape.

Studying Fine Arts and the opportunity of being an artist in residence in Paris helped Tania to realise how art and in particular sculpture, uses materials and processes to visually expose an innate language.” This became my objective; to actualise the hidden essence deep within the material, myself and others.”

Soon after art school Tania met Italia, who after 50 years of making very structured, high-end fashion, began to deconstruct boundaries to create more simplified garments. Italia’s influence was a great inspiration for Tania, birthing a new creative vision.

It took many subsequent years for Tania to truly embody the process of simplicity, a discipline evoking the best form possible from each individual textile and its natural form. Simplicity has its integrity revealed within the structure of the garment.

Simplicity also calls forth a practice of waste reduction. By extracting the best possible form from each textile results in near zero waste, as was done in ancient times.

Tania’s early career forged original pieces that spawned abundant artistic expression, born from a desire for slow, intentional fashion honouring natures rhythms and savouring attentive dedication to each element of the creative process.

After decades of refining her craft Tania has a very deep respect for the natural beauty that lies within the materials themselves. They get better with wearing, as if the threads of nature are woven into the landscape of the wearer.

All materials are either left in their natural colour or dyed using organic plant-based dyes.

“My process is defined by helping the wearer to discover that behind the mind’s chatter lies a timeless essence that is the source of their radiance…this is Handmade.”
